Neal Cavalier-Smith cut his teeth in IT and publishing at age 16 when his first computer games and ‘how-to’ books were published in the UK. He went on to write over a dozen IT books and technical manuals and to spend a ‘sandwich’ year as a Systems Analyst at the Engineering Industry Training Board.
He graduated from Sunderland with a BA(hons) in Data Processing. His thesis was on teaching-software for hearing impaired children and he co-authored a paper on the subject with his supervisor Dr Chris Bloor.
With the help of a Durham University Business School 'Graduate into Enterprise' course Neal set up a successful niche publishing and retail company in the late 80s. He became a Director of the equality lobbying group Stonewall in 1997 in which year he also began a Masters in Business Administration (Management) at City University Business School. For his final MBA project he set up a large store in London's West End that has now grown to a chain of shops turning over £millions per annum.
In 1999 he substantially sold his interest in his own company and began work as a freelance strategy consultant, since when he has consulted on his own account and for Cavali, Challenge, Skybridge and Design Bridge UK and NL, on projects and companies as varied as Dods Political Publishing, Unilever, DSM Nutritional, Numico, Danone, Unilever, Chiquita and Marine Harvest.
